Rescue Me ID: 15-01-16-00110Ruger (male)

Fox Terrier Mix    Age: Puppy

Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Update on Ruger 1/25, original post below: Let me tell you what a joy he is to foster. His beautiful, soft copper hair is coming in. His skin is now smooth. He's going to be one handsome furball. He loves to shower you with kisses, loves being petted especially belly rubs. He knows 'paw', working on 'sit' and I have him going to the bathroom outside on command. We are teaching him 'off' as he does like to jump when he gets excited to see you. He is gentle taking food out of your hand and he is not food aggressive. I can put my hand in his bowl and there are no issues. It also doesn't bother him if my dogs hover by him eating. He pays no ... (Read More)mind. Since having him for 2 weeks, Ruger adapts to other dogs' behaviors. Having 2 juveniles and 1 senior, he reacts to my dog's behaviors. So, if they're all running around outside or horsing around with each other, he's doing the same. If they're all laying down taking a nap, he will follow suit. He's still a champ having no accidents in the house. I still kennel him at night and he knows the word 'kennel'. He goes in without a fuss. He's great with children. Just be on lookout, if your child(ren) leave toys around, Ruger will think it's ok for him to chew. We correct and tell him 'no, and drop it', and he does. Ruger would fit any home, whether it's a single person, couple, or family, with or without other dogs. I do not own cats, so I do not know how Ruger is with them. ******************************************* Ruger's foster believes he is a terrier/spaniel mix, possibly wire-haired though it is hard to tell until his hair comes in. He is about 25-30 lbs but needs to fill out a little. He is around a year old. From Ruger's foster: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I looked passed his hair loss from mange and looked into his eyes and saw a beautiful swan. Ruger loved the car ride to my home. He looked out the window the whole time. Ruger was scared at first coming into my house, as he didn't know what to expect. But within 5 minutes of meeting my 3 dogs (he already met my sons in the car ride home ages 2 and 4), his tail untucked and he was wagging away. Ruger is not food aggressive at all. He loves to be petted and loves his belly rubs. We're feeding him twice a day as he was skin and bones. He has not had one accident in my house since we got him. I do have a fenced in yard so that's a bonus, although he did go to the bathroom on the leash with me and he doesn't pull. He is crate trained. No accidents or shredding his blanket in the crate at night. He gets along with my dogs and is not afraid of children. He actually follows my 2 year old around and licks him. I can't wait to show you how he looks in a few weeks. His hair has been growing back. ************************************************* Rumi and Ruger were surrendered to a small rural shelter, over the Christmas holiday, in horrible condition. They were going to be put down, when one of the shelter workers called us and asked us if we would consider saving them. We agreed, and sent them to the local vet for boarding and treatment. The vet determined they had sarcoptic mange (caused by a mite and completely treatable). He not only refused to treat them, he advised us to put them down and 'use our resources elsewhere', and then he gave us to the end of the day to get them out of his practice. Well, we know that sarcoptic mange is not a death sentence. The problem was that all the local vets and facilities we work with were either closed for the holiday or completely full with boarders! There was literally 'no room at the inn' for these two young pups. Finally we called a vet we use when we pull from a different shelter over 2 hours away, and they just laughed and said of course! Bring them in! So a wonderful volunteer drove over 8 hours to make the entire journey to move these two to a vet who would treat them. A Christmas miracle for sure! Rumi and Ruger are now vetted and spayed/neutered and have been treated for their mange. They are moving into foster homes on 1/10. At that time we hope to get better pictures and get to know them a little better. The vet estimates that they are just under a year old. We will update as soon as we can!     Lucy is a 2 year old Fox Terrier/Chihuahua mix. She has been treated very badly at some point and it sometimes makes her very timid. She is super sweet and will come and sit in your lap forever as long as you let her come to you. She will cower when you try to pick her up like she thinks you're going to hurt her. She is a wonderful young lady weighing about 10 pounds. It is probably best given her timidness that she not be put with really small children. Adoption fee $150.00

PIease Read Before Adopting a Fox Terrier in North Carolina
Fox Terrier Dogs can make good pets in North Carolina if they match your IifestyIe. Fox Terriers have been around for centuries and have been bred to produce a number of different types of dogs. Today, Fox Terrier generally refers to either a Smooth or Wire-haired variety, which are virtually identical with the exception of their coats. Fox Terriers are playful, affectionate, scrappy little dogs. Fox Terriers get along well with children and can typically be socialized to interact well with other dogs, although they have been known to pick fights with much larger canines. Fox Terriers may hunt non-canine pets, especially birds. This breed needs plenty of exercise and should be kept on a leash or in a fenced yard because of its tendency to chase and explore. Fox Terriers can live in an apartment if they get enough exercise.
